November is Family Violence Prevention Month. Each November, communities can help raise awareness and prevent family violence by organizing and participating in public events and activities with a focus on awareness and prevention.
Wainwright & District FCSS participates by hosting family violence prevention-focused community events, such as our Walk This Way event. We also raise awareness through our annual Red Silhouette Campaign.
It's up to all of us to end family violence and help spread the word about the resources available to people who may be experiencing it. To show support for family violence prevention, we encourage all community members to attend community events, have conversations with friends and loved ones, and wear purple throughout November.

Red Silhouette CampaignThe Red Silhouette Campaign was started in 1990 by a group of women in Minnesota out of their concern over escalating domestic violence cases causing death in their state. They created 26 life-sized red silhouettes to commemorate the lives of 26 women who lost their lives as a result of domestic violence. Each bore the name of the woman it represented, and gave a visual representation behind the name--someone who had once lived, worked, had neighbours, friends, family and children. They were known as the "Silent Witnesses".
Since that time, things have grown and changed to reflect the concerns of domestic violence and its impact on not only women, but men, children, the elderly, and even pets. Our Red Silhouettes aim to bring awareness into our community of the reality of domestic violence, let victims know that they aren't alone and that help is available, and to educate the public about domestic violence. There is a limited quantity of Red Silhouettes and they are popular, so don't hesitate!
